Expressing ourselves is something we all do all the time, whether we mean to or not. Our posture and body language, tone of voice, eyes, hands, even our breath, tell others what’s going on inside of us. As we get older, we get better at controlling what we communicate, but no one can hide completely from the people around them. *Expressing exactly what we’re feeling—our emotions—isn’t easy. Sharing our innermost, private information can feel foolish, even dangerous. Why risk it?
Artists usually receive attention for the product they *create—what’s called an artist’s “body of work”—but the creative process is as important as the product. Just the way an athlete develops a strong, beautiful body as a result of the exercise that also benefits the athlete’s physical, mental and spiritual health, an artist develops a “body of work” as a result of exercising creative expression, which also benefits the artist’s overall health and development.
Some say people are born creative. Others say creativity can be learned. Either way, creativity is what a person brings of himself or herself to an idea or product. A creative person knows how to become one with a situation in order to find a solution that was not possible from the outside looking in. Creativity has been associated with genius, mental illness, divine intervention, coincidence, and **muses.
Creativity also involves taking chances with new ideas, and breaking ***assumptions. Artists often throw out the usual way of looking at something and try a totally new approach that might seem impossible or unthinkable. It’s often called “thinking outside the box,” a valuable skill for innovation and problem-solving. The creative process is one of the most satisfying and rewarding of human experiences. It brings a sense of excitement, joy, and purpose.
